While the interviews were conducted for two different projects and initially seemed dissimilar, my review of the notes revealed great commonalities in how the two run their businesses. Their insights make a great playbook for the leadership basics from which every executive can learn.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b68637a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b68637a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The first was with Sophi Tranchell, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190302042700\/http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-27203656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Divine Chocolate<\/a>. Divine is a privately held social enterprise based in the U.K. that sources fair-trade cocoa beans from farmers in Ghana who are also part owners of the company. The second interview was with Bill Sandbrook, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190302042700\/https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/13964050\/1\/u-s-concrete-ceo-on-trump-s-inauguration-and-campaign-promises.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Concrete<\/a>, a publicly held company based in the U.S. that produces ready-mixed concrete and aggregates. Tranchell is a former antiapartheid activist; Sandbrook\u2019s early career was in the military.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62cdb90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"62cdb90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to the everyday challenges of being a CEO, each leader wrestles with making a product composed of multiple commodity ingredients subject to fluctuations in price and availability. Each faces tough competition that requires striking a balance between cost and quality. Each has intricate distribution channels where things can go awry. And both are succeeding by getting these five often-overlooked fundamentals of leadership right.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80c598b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"80c598b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Hire people who can find meaning through your business.<\/strong>\u00a0You may think that because everyone loves chocolate, everyone wants to work for a chocolate company. But it is Divine Chocolate\u2019s social mission, not its product, that makes it distinct and draws talent. Tranchell said she seeks to work with people who are \u201cpassionate and curious\u201d and want to change the world for the better. She looks for an entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to see \u201cthe mission impact along with the business impact.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f6ecb80 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f6ecb80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Conversely, you may think that it is tough to find top talent longing for a career in concrete. But in an increasingly digital world, working with a tangible, durable product has appeal, said Sandbrook. He tries to find people who \u201clike to build things and spend time outside.\u201d Sandbrook said that he wants people to grow to love the industry and the company. And that\u2019s how you make concrete as sexy as chocolate<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c76a9f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c76a9f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Provide clear, compelling goals.<\/strong>\u00a0Sandbrook explained that concrete is \u201ca business of small, incremental improvements. You don\u2019t run it with 100 metrics \u2014 focus on the key ones.\u2026If you can get your team excited about achieving a goal, what the business is isn\u2019t actually that important.\u201d Tranchell noted that as the CEO of a relatively small business, it is incumbent upon her to ensure that everyone knows what they\u2019re doing. \u201cYou have to get good at telling stories so that people know why we are doing what we\u2019re doing. I learned that from my work as an activist,\u201d she said. \u201cThen, be open and transparent with information so everyone knows where we are and where we are going.\u201d She sends employees to Ghana regularly to see how their work affects the farmers with whom they work.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c4ac03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c4ac03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"selectionSharer\"><strong>Give people a path for growth and impact.<\/strong>\u00a0Tranchell said that for many young people, \u201cstudent debt makes it difficult for them to put their money where their mouths are\u201d with regard to bringing their values to their work. Social enterprises can help fill that gap by paying a wage that allows young people to recognize their impact while still being able to make ends meet and pay off student loans. Furthermore, she hires people in all stages of their careers in each of the geographic areas from which the company distributes, and gives those employees freedom to build that local business.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73a54be e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"73a54be\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ac915e elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"2ac915e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-6a3f2ca8bbea7\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-edf9e79 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"edf9e79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-6a3f2ca8bc7e6\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  lqd-highlight-classic lqd-highlight-grow-left p\"  > The CEOs\u2019 insights make a great playbook for the leadership basics from which every executive can learn.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4cb68ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4cb68ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sandbrook said that U.S. Concrete lays out a clear map for maturing into management. \u201cExpect to make decisions early and be rewarded for performance,\u201d he said. He wants people at all levels to be strategic \u201cchess players,\u201d willing to make decisions and be innovative and creative in the \u201cbasic blocking-and-tackling\u201d in the business. Strategic thinkers at a concrete company may have a different kind of impact than they would at a social enterprise, but it can be just as motivating to make a difference in how a company does business as it is to affect society at large.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f0c2eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8f0c2eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Foster a positive, supportive culture.<\/strong>\u00a0Sandbrook said that he encourages an environment of collaboration and respect where \u201cegos are checked at the door\u201d and expressed a high tolerance for low-consequence mistakes as learning experiences. \u201cIf you cut people off at the legs for making a mistake, they will work to be the one\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0to decide,\u201d he said. \u201cThat hurts the business.\u201d He also noted that the company\u2019s performance focus means that no one has to watch a clock. \u201cYou can succeed here and still have a life.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dcbe3b4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dcbe3b4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Lead with a higher purpose.<\/strong>\u00a0Tranchell told me that she has trouble with the notion of leadership as an end in itself. \u201cYou don\u2019t [run an organization] to \u2018do\u2019 leadership,\u201d she said. \u201cYou do it because you see change that needs to happen and you can make a difference. I believe we need accountable and transparent companies that are willing to address social injustice.\u201d Tranchell clearly draws heavily on her experience as an activist, a time she describes as one in which people wanted to change the world and, in the case of apartheid, actually did. She aims to pass on not simply the passion but also the belief that collective action can have impact. \u201cLots of people thought Divine Chocolate wouldn\u2019t work,\u201d she said. \u201cWe believed it would and it has.\u201dSimilarly, Tranchell spoke of a culture that is \u201cfair and inclusive that emphasizes sharing,\u201d one in which \u201cwe try to stay nimble and have fun.\u201d As a small business, \u201cwe can still get everyone in the same room once a month to celebrate success and solve problems.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8947b79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8947b79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sandbrook came into the private sector after cultivating an ethos of service in the military. His higher purpose \u2014 \u201chaving that team accomplish things they might not have even known were possible\u201d \u2014 reflects that heritage. He described his greatest satisfaction and self-actualization as team building. \u201cIt\u2019s the intangible rewards, not the tangible,\u201d he said. \u201cI thrive when I can motivate them to a higher level.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da56373 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da56373\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The hard (and sweet) truth: Amid the never-ending blizzard of leadership books and talks with the latest advice, it is good to remember that getting the basics right is the first, essential step to building a great organization.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe44cf2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fe44cf2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Eric J.
